NATIONAL
Event: For schools - In Term 1 LEARNZ is offering a virtual field trip supported by the Department of Conservation to Goat Island Marine Reserve, 28 February - 2 March.

Primary curriculum - Science - rocky shore habitat, adaptations, marine environment and food webs.  Find out more at www.learnz.org.nz.

Event: Offered by the Sir Peter Blake Trust and NIWA, Sea and Learn is a hands-on marine science education programme for senior high school students.  Conducted onboard NIWA's marine research vessel Kaharoa, the programme gives students practical science exercises.

The schools for 2007 that applied and were selected include Taihape Area School, Whakatane High School, Mount Manganui College, Bay of Islands College, Dargaville High School, Botany Downs College, Mercury Bay Area School, Papatoetoe High School, Kaipara College and Takapuna Grammar School.  Sea and Learn will be offered to South Island schools in 2008.

Bring your own gear or get free hire for our mask, snorkel, fins and

Bream Head Coastal Archaeological Walk

Archaeologist Jonathon Carpenter talks on managing the track upgrade and impacts on archaeological sites at Bream Head – this includes a walk to the gun emplacement and along the ridge to Smugglers Bay (note the route on the day may vary depending on track upgrade progress).

  • Meet at the Urquharts Bay car park, trip is 10am – 12 noon

  • Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather

Snells Beach Shellfish Monitoring programme, Sunday March  2nd ,  8.30 - 10.30 am (approx.)
Venue/meeting place:
  Reserve at the bottom of Ariki Drive, Snells Beach

Learn more about the creatures inhabiting your sandy playground. A half hour introductory talk on the development of the intertidal environment of the area followed by a shellfish sampling exercise to check population changes against earlier surveys. Learn about circrats, quantities and species, bivalves and sea-snails. 
All welcome, children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. No cost, bookings essential as numbers are limited. Shoes or aqua shoes advised and be prepared to get these wet and sandy. Also bring sunhats, sunscreen, sunglasses

AUCKLAND
 

This specially-commissioned Seaweek show by the Real Theatre Company takes you on the journey of a Maui's dolphin, facing the perils the last small population of real Maui's dolphins face in their struggle for survival. Set in the haunting tunnels of historic Fort Takapuna, this show takes you on a physical journey through a series of settings where the story unfolds. Not for children under 5 and all children will require adult company.

VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP

LEARNZ will run a virtual field trip to the Goat Island Marine Reserve with Mike (pictured), the virtual learning teacher. Bring your class to the beach for a rocky shore study at Goat Island marine reserve. During this field trip students will study a typical example of an eastern North Island rocky seashore. Then swimming and boating in the reserve students will be able to get up close to the protected marine habitat and the huge variety of sea life it sustains.

Learn how our actions on land affect our oceans. Build nest boxes for penguins, study if they are used, and clean up the beach by Colville School and graph the results

Raglan / West Coast

Raglan Sea Festival and Community Maui Mosaic Art Project, Saturday 8 March from 10am to 2pm,  Kopua Domain

  

A fun, family centred and educational day for community and visitors. Local mosaic expert Lin Van Craenenbroeck, with tiles and tools on hand, will help people to add their own pieces to the life size Mosaic Maui Dolphin as a permanent testimony to Whaingaroa’s care for our neighbours, the endangered Maui Dolphin.

Also work with Peggi Oki in her Minds for Water visual petition, to be presented to the IWC (International Whaling Commission) meeting in Chile (see www.visualpetition.com). Special guest Peggi Oki (original Dog Town skateboarder) has dedicated her life to raising awareness to protect cetaceans. Bring along your own bits of old china, tea cups or colourful plates to add to the mosaic on the day.

Forest & Bird’s Mercury Bay branch is running an information stand. There will be hardy costal native plants, Andrew Crowe books and produce for sale. Sue Neureuter a local landscaper will be on hand to assist with any questions regarding the plants. Committee members will be on hand to discuss any questions on the current Bird survey taking place and other Forest & Bird activites happenng in the local area. The raffle for a penguin painting will be drawn at 1 pm.

BOP Polytech marine studies students will set up microscopes at the beach shelter for our budding scientists to look at beach bugs close up.

Whale of a Swim & Inter-Island Paddle Board Challenge

Time: Competitors are expected to be passing the finish line from 11am

Starfish & things which go splash in the night!

Time: 9.30am

Place: Eastbay REAP, 21 Pyne Street

Details: Bring your little ones to a morning of learning about the sea. Kura Paul-Burke and Louise Shaw will leave you with loads of fun ideas for exploring. Songs, Seaweed, Sculpting, Splashing, Shells, Sorting, Storytelling, Starfish… You will have a whale of a time!

 Kayak around Moutohora (Whale Island)

Time: 6pm departure

Place: Whakatane boat ramp

Details: If you enjoy a little adventure and want to learn about Moutohora, than this trip is for you. It is an approximately three hours round trip including water taxi to/from the island where KG Kayaks guides provide you with a commentary on the history and natural environment while you enjoy the spectacular coastal scenery. Cost $135 (includes boat trips, kayak hire and guides) per person.

Tuesday 4th March

West end splash for toddlers

Time: 10am – 12pm

Place: End of West End Road, Ohope (by toilet block)

Details: After the success of last year’s splash, Eastbay REAP and DOC are planning a morning for toddlers to explore and enjoy the shores of West End with their parents/care-givers again. The walk will be led by Kura Paul-Burke who will share her knowledge of the vastness of the creatures that we might discover. Remember to slip, slop, slap, bring a change of clothes and some morning tea. Children must be supervised by an adult carer.

Paddle Ohiwa Harbour

Time: 9am departure

Place: Port Ohope Wharf/boat ramp

Details: A great chance for an enjoyable paddle of Ohiwa Harbour with plenty of opportunities to learn about the history, geology and some of the plants and animals of the area. The tour will be led by Kenny from KG Kayaks. Cost $60 (usually $75) with all gear provided.

Details: Come and learn about various marine issues including Kura Paul-Burke talking about the Ohiwa Harbour mussel situation, Hori Parata about his experiences with whales and as a Kaitiaki and Rosemary Tully will share her knowledge about our various marine mammal visitors. Coastal explorer paddle from Whakatane to Ohope Beach

Place: Whakatane Heads

Details: Guided kayak trip around the Whakatane Heads to West End. The tour will take in the magnificent views of Kohi Point, Otarawairere Bay and the Whakatane Heads, finishing with a coffee at the Beach Haven. The tour will be led by Kenny from KG Kayaks. Celebrate! ‘08

Time: from 10.30am

Place: Mataatua Reserve

Details: Come and talk to the DOC crew and learn about Te Paepae o Aotea Marine Reserve, marine mammal visitors to the Eastern Bay and how to stay safe around marine mammals. Diveworks Charters will be running short boat trips out of the bar and around to Kohi Point – this will be a fantastic chance to see our landmarks from a different view point and learn about some of the stories of the area. Cost $10 adult/$5  12yrs and under. (These trips are subject to weather and tide conditions, Life jackets available in all sizes)

Family fun paddle on Ohiwa Harbour

Time: 8.30am

Place: End of Wharf Road, Kutarere

Details: A rare chance for the whole family to have fun on a guided trip around the Kutarere side of the harbour with Kenny McCracken from KG Kayaks, Mike Jones from DOC and stories from Upukorehe elders. You will need to provide your own kayaks and buoyancy aids. Gear can be hired from KG Kayaks. Bookings essential as spaces are strictly limited.

TARANAKI

Paige Hareb, Seaweek 2008 spokesperson

Paige Hareb, spokesperson for Seaweek 2008.

Paige Hareb (the number 2 ranked junior woman surfer in the world and Taranaki 2007 junior sportswoman of the year) is the spokesperson for Seaweek 2008. Paige competes in surfing competitions all over the world and wants Kiwis to keep our beaches clean and look after the local wildlife. As well as promoting Seaweek thoughout the country, Paige is helping out with a local little blue penguin conservation project in her home town of Oakura.

Oakura, East End and Fitzroy beaches are internationally recognised Blue Flag Beaches that achieve this status by meeting high standards in criteria including water quality and environmental management.

Events

Sunday 2 March, 9.30am - 3.30pm: Whitecliffs guided walk. Meeting point: Bus Centre, Ariki St – bus leaves at 9.00am.
Join DOC staff on this 5.7 km hard walk through farmland and scrub and enjoy spectacular views along the coastline before returning along the beach.
Bring a gold coin donation for the bus and bring your own food, water, hat and sunscreen for the walk. Complimentary barbeque provided.

Sunday 2 March, 12pm - 3pm: Guided walk to Ohawe Beach and back: Denby Road End, Hawera
Walkway researcher Diana Reid will lead this popular three hour return coastal walk. Dogs are welcome on this walk!

Celebrating the Sea art exhibition

Meet at Tangimoana Beach
DOC staff will join forces with a team from the New Zealand Defence Force from Ohakea and local some volunteers dragging driftwood up the beach to create a protective barrier for sand dunes to form behind. Driftwood also acts as depository for native sand-binding grasses such as Pingao and Spinifex.

Join the Manawatu Estuary Trust and DOC staff for a day of activities celebrating this unique estuary environment. The day will begin with the Manawatu Estuary Trust and Forest & Bird's annual ‘Farewell to the Birds’ ceremony.

Have a good look at the Arctic waders before they depart for the far north, then join in the raffle, picnic, whale sand sculpture making and plastic rubbish collection.

Pingao Planting and conservation fun

Wednesday 5th March - Learn how with schools who have grown their own.  The Whanganui Museum, Sarjeant Art Gallery, Go-Deep-Scuba and the Department of Conservation team up to spend an afternoon together at the Sea, making art, learning about hidden beach creatures and about what harms marine life (litter), planting, learning and enjoying everything to do with the beach.

Join Forest & Bird’s marine creatures and help make our beaches and coastlines litter-free and healthier places to live. Working with local schools, Forest & Bird will start their beach clean event in Oriental Parade and work south around the coast. All litter collected will be sorted, counted and where possible recycled, with the resulting information provided to participating schools to ongoing educational awareness programmes.
