Marlborough Schools ‘Pledge for the Sea’ competition

Here in New Zealand, we’re surrounded by the sea. Many of us live by the sea or get out there regularly, whether it’s to enjoy our many beaches, go swimming, fishing, surfing or walking, or visit our many island sanctuaries, marine reserves or favourite coastal spots.

The Seaweek theme for 2013 is “Healthy seas…healthy people”.

This is your chance to have a think about the importance of the sea in your life, and how the health of the sea affects the health of your family, your friends and yourself.

What can the Councils, the Department of Conservation and the Government do to keep the sea healthy?

What can you do to keep the seas healthy?

TELL US!

Write a pledge to our governing organizations explaining how you would like them to look after the health of the sea, and in return, what you will do to look after the health of the sea.

OR:

Inspire others with your love of the sea, by writing a story, poem or essay that demonstrates how important the sea is to you and why it should be important to everyone.

The winners of each topic within the primary and high school sections will receive a voucher for a day trip to Lochmara Lodge Wildlife Recovery and Arts Centre in Queen Charlotte Sound and book vouchers for their school, with the winners being featured in the Marlborough Midweek.

Pledges will be judged on eloquence, originality of idea, inspiration to others and how they reflect the Seaweek 2013 theme.

WHEN, WHERE AND HOW?

Post or email your pledge to the Department of Conservation, PO Box 51, Renwick, or  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by Sunday 10 March.

Email entries may be in the form of scanned documents, pdf or word documents or mailed as original paper documents. Colin King will announce the winners on Friday 15 March, with the Marlborough Express and Department of Conservation representatives.
