Seaweek symposium - Otago’s Changing Seas: Looking after our Coastline

Sunday 7 March, 1pm - 5pm

Where: New Zealand Marine Studies Centre, Hatchery Rd, Portobello, Otago Peninsula

Otago has treasures on its doorstep – our local seas provide nourishment, recreation and employment. How can we protect and preserve our coast for the health, wealth and happiness of future generations? This half-day symposium is an opportunity for discussion and information-sharing. Scientific, conservation and community experts will share up-to-date information about the marine environment, current research and conservation issues, and different perspectives on its use. All are welcome, and there is no charge to attend.  Free transport will be provided from Dunedin. Coaches leave the railway station at 12 noon, and return from Portobello at 5:30 pm.

Northern & Southern NZ Rocky Shore Guide Launch

The NZ Marine Studies Centre, proudly supported and funded by Mobil, have produced a handy guide to the common animals and plants living on the rocky seashores of New Zealand. The Southern New Zealand Rocky Shore Guide is currently available to visitors to the NZ Marine Studies Centre and both the Southern and Northern Guides will be officially launched at the ‘Otago’s Changing Seas’ symposium on March 7.

The Great Dunedin Coastal Cleanup

Sunday 14 March

Celebrate Seaweek by cleaning up Dunedin’s coastline! Collect bags and gloves from DOC (77 Stuart St, Dunedin), DCC Service Centre (The Octagon), Market in the Reserve (650 Princes St, Dunedin, Sunday March 7) or use your own.  Collect inorganic rubbish from any piece of coast/harbour/inlet between Waikouaiti and Taieri Mouth, and bring it along to Hancock Park clubrooms, St Kilda, (crn Victoria Rd and John Wilson Dr) between 12.30 and 3pm for rubbish sorting, recycling and entertainment!  Check out our Fish for the future displays and activities, videos, free sausage sizzle, prizegiving and rocky shore guide release. Free copies of the Southern Rocky Shore Guide will be available.  Prizes for most rubbish collected and strangest item found.

‘Weigh-in only’ times for northern beaches:

  • Waikouaiti (Beach St carpark) 12pm
  • Karitane (Karitane Hall carpark) 12.30pm
  • Warrington (Domain carpark behind surf club) 1pm

Seaweek Detective Trail

Running throughout Seaweek 2010.  Celebrate Seaweek at Otago Museum with a detective trail for kids and adults! Help our baby sea turtle navigate safely to the feeding grounds by answering all the questions correctly.
