Auckland City  Beach Clean-ups

Motions Creek volunteer clean-up day, The clean-up coincides with Seaweek - One Ocean - it starts with me. Please bring gumboots, wheelbarrows and wear gloves. Refreshments will be provided, free, 2 March 2008, 9.30am, Motions Creek, meet at the Westmere Scout Hall, Meola Road, Westmere, ph (09) 354 2113.

Oakley Creek volunteer clean-up, Pick up inorganic rubbish to keep the Oakley Creek environs beautiful. Bring gumboots, gloves and wear appropriate clothing to suit the weather. Light refreshments provided , free, 9 March 2008, 9.30am, Phyllis Reserve, Metro Football ground carpark, 22a Phyllis Street, Mt Albert, ph (09) 354 2113.

Tour of Mahurangi Technical Institute aquaculture research facilities.

 

Including their world leading project in the breeding of NZ Eels and several species of NZ Native freshwater fish.

 

Date: Every weekday during Seaweek.

Time: 11am to 12noon

Meet at MTI Reception, 11 Glenmore Drive, Warkworth.

Quick viewing of 15,000 litre reef aquarium and freshwater tropical aquarium then 3 minute walk to "B Block" aquaculture building.

Nothing to bring except an enquiring mind and a camera (if you want to). Groups will be given a guided tour of MTI aquaculture facility by Quentin O'Brien (assistant marine biologist) with an explanation of the rational behind the project.

Shellfish Monitoring at Snell's Beach
Sunday March 2nd
8.30am for approx 2 hours

Meet at the reserve at the bottom of Ariki Drive

Learn more about the creatures inhabiting your sandy playground. A half hour introductory talk on the development of the intertidal environment of the area followed by a shellfish sampling exercise to check population changes against earlier surveys. Learn about circrats, qu
antities and species, bivalves and seasnails.

All welcome, children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
No cost, bookings essential as numbers limited, shoes or aqua shoes are advised but be  prepared to get them wet and sandy. Also bring sunhats, sunscreen, sunglasses. To book phone Department of Conservation 425 7812

 


Seaweek at the Leigh Marine Reserve
"Beach Adventure at Goat Island"

Saturday March 8th

Free Discovery Sessions will run on the hour at 1.30pm and 2.30pm, bookings essential
This was very popular last year - book early to avoid disappointment
Come and explore the wonders of the Leigh marine reserve with Tony and Jenny Enderby, renowned local natural history writers and photographers specializing in marine life. They will be taking groups along the shore to discover the amazing marine life on the rocks and in the pools. Can you tell a half crab from a chiton? Did you know barnacles are related to crabs and stand on their heads? Spot the octopus. Also included will be snorkelling tips and an idea of what to look for. Come and enjoy this special place.

Families welcome, all children 12 and under need to be accompanied by an adult.
No cost, bookings essential as numbers limited, shoes or reef walkers are advised but be  prepared to get them wet. Also bring sunhats, sunscreen, sunglasses, cameras.
