Ocean Champion Winners

Lorella Doherty from Taranaki challenged herself to pick up 10,000 cigarette butts during the 10 days of Seaweek. Not only did she achieve that but she was also voted the winner of our Senior Ocean Champion award & received $500 to support her work thanks to the New Zealand Coastal Society. Here she is collecting her award from the NZ Coastal Society’s Paul Klinac at our Bill Ballantine Memorial Lecture event in Auckland.

Our 3 Junior Ocean Champion winners were Room 6 Brooklyn School Motuka, Tī Kōuka Class Waiheke Primary School and Room 4 Makauri School Gisborne. They each won a selection of fantastic spot prizes from Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari and the Auckland Outboard Boating Club. Thanks to everyone who entered and congratulations to all our winners.

What do you do with all the plastic you find on the beach? Does it end up in the bin or have you ever tried to give it a second life by turning it into a piece of art like Lorella here from Rethinking Plastic Revolution? Lorella was our 2019 Ocean Champion Challenge winner for her commitment to pick up 10,000 cigarette butts from all over New Plymouth, raising awareness that butts are plastic and not degradable and the biggest single item contributor of marine plastic pollution.

Have you thought about entering the Ocean Champion Challenge? Prizes available for Junior and Senior Entrants!! www.seaweek.org.nz/nominate-your-ocean-champion/
