Haere mai! Welcome to NZAEE Seaweek – Kaupapa Moana!

Seaweek – Kaupapa Moana is New Zealand’s annual national week celebrating the sea which takes place from Saturday 29 February to Sunday 8 March 2020.

Hosted by the NZ Association for Environmental Education (NZAEE), Seaweek focuses on learning about the ocean because it is so important to all our lives, no matter how far you are from it! Our mission is about exciting and inspiring all New Zealanders to renew their connections with the sea! This is not just for children or those involved with formal education – it’s a time for all of us to get to know our ocean, its habitats, characteristics and inhabitants better.

We are using the following theme Connecting With Our Seas and whakatauki:
Ko au te moana, ko te moana ko au  –  I am the sea, the sea is me

We would like to highlight the diverse connections and interactions we have with the sea which makes our lives so intertwined with the health of our ocean environment.

Whether you are a Seaweek veteran or this is your first time organising an event, no matter how big or how small, we are here to support and help promote your mahi! If you or your organisation would like to sponsor or support Seaweek 2020 please get in touch with us by emailing seaweek@merc.org.nz

Subscribe to our Seaweek mailing list and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to keep up with all the news – there’s a sign-up box for our mailing list at the bottom right of this page! Seaweek comprises a wide range of events, activities, opportunities, competitions and calls to action. For example you could attend a guided snorkel or a beach cleanup, take part in a planting event or listen to a lecture to broaden your knowledge on various topics relating to the ocean. Our hope is that Seaweek opens your eyes to the impacts we have on our ocean and provides an opportunity to learn about things we can all do to help protect our seas.

What do you do with all the plastic you find on the beach? Does it end up in the bin or have you ever tried to give it a second life by turning it into a piece of art like Lorella here from Rethinking Plastic Revolution? Lorella was our 2019 Ocean Champion Challenge winner for her commitment to pick up 10,000 cigarette butts from all over New Plymouth, raising awareness that butts are plastic and not degradable and the biggest single item contributor of marine plastic pollution.

Have you thought about entering the Ocean Champion Challenge? Prizes available for Junior and Senior Entrants!! www.seaweek.org.nz/nominate-your-ocean-champion/
